Lesson 1 – Introduction to nRF Cloud

Overview

Connected products today require more attention than ever long after they ship. A device in the field can crash in ways you never saw on your bench, lose connectivity in a specific region, have exposure to a newly published vulnerability, or need a new feature rolled out to thousands of units over-the-air without disruption to the end customer experience. nRF Cloud is a platform to monitor device performance, investigate failures, and deliver fixes and updates over the air across development and production.

This lesson is your introduction to the platform. Before we look at how devices connect and how projects are configured in later lessons, we’ll build a clear mental model of what nRF Cloud does, how your devices’ data travels from the edge into the platform, and how real teams fold nRF Cloud into the way they build and ship products. By the end, you’ll understand the vocabulary and the big-picture flow that the rest of the course builds on.

Continuous Release Cycles for Embedded Systems

Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Describe nRF Cloud’s three core capabilities: remote debugging, over-the-air (OTA) delivery, and fleet monitoring.
  • Explain how device data flows from a single device up into a project and organization, and how that raw data is aggregated into issues and fleet-wide metrics.
  • Recognize how teams typically integrate and adopt nRF Cloud across the lifecycle of a device fleet.

Topics in this lesson

Work through the topics below in order:

  • What is nRF Cloud
  • How your device data flows into nRF Cloud
  • How teams adopt nRF Cloud

What’s next

Once you’ve worked through the topics above, you’ll have the big picture: what nRF Cloud does, how data flows from a device up into a project and organization and aggregates into issues and fleet metrics, and how teams adopt the platform over time. Starting in this lesson, you will have the opportunity to get hands-on with the nRF Cloud sandbox demo, inspecting fleet volume and software version distribution. In Lesson 2, you will learn how devices connect to nRF Cloud and about the hierarchy of organizations, projects, and versioning.
