Lesson 2 – Connecting devices and organizing projects

Overview

In Lesson 1, we built the big picture of what nRF Cloud does. In this lesson, we explore the first step of that flow: how data gets from your devices into an nRF Cloud project. We’ll look at how data reaches the right project and the right device, what nRF Cloud needs from you to make sense of it, and how to confirm that it arrived.

We’ll also look at how an account is organized, from the organization down to individual devices and cohorts, and at the different ways to group devices and software builds inside a project.

Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Explain how chunks are routed to the correct project and attributed to the correct device.
  • Verify incoming data in the Processing Log, including manually uploaded chunks.
  • Describe the organizational hierarchy in nRF Cloud: organization, project, fleet, device sets, and cohorts.
  • Explain hardware version, software type, and software version, and group devices and software builds from the Devices tab, charts, the Versions tab, and issues.

Topics in this lesson

Work through the topics below in order:

  • How to get data into an nRF Cloud project
  • How does the organizational hierarchy work in nRF Cloud
  • How to group devices and software builds inside my project

Important

Want to try this with your own devices?

This express course explains how nRF Cloud works, and every exercise runs in the nRF Cloud sandbox so you don’t need an account or hardware to follow along. If you would like to connect your own device after the course, create an nRF Cloud account and follow the nRF Cloud Quickstart guides.

What’s next

Once you’ve worked through the topics above, you will understand how devices are first connected and how a project and fleet are organized. In Lesson 3, we dig into what you can do with device data once it is uploaded: inspecting metric payloads, using the device timeline, and exploring traces, issue detection, and Device Vitals.

Progress is tracked separately for each language. Switching will continue from your progress in that language or start fresh if you haven't begun.

Your current progress is saved, and you can switch back anytime.
