Lesson 3 – Understanding device behavior and firmware issues

Overview

Now that you’ve learned how to connect your first devices and get the data flowing, let’s dig into what you can do with that data. In this lesson, we inspect metric payloads, learn how to use the device timeline, delve into traces and the issue detection feature, and understand how to interpret Device Vitals and find devices with device search.

Spike in sync failures in a device timeline

Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Inspect a metric payload in a device’s Processing Log, and understand built-in metrics on Nordic platforms.
  • Use the device timeline to inspect a single device’s behavior and correlate custom debugging data.
  • Explain how issues are grouped from individual traces, and inspect issue- and trace-level detail such as backtraces, registers, and logs.
  • Interpret Device Vitals (Battery Life, Stable Hours, Connectivity, and Flash Wear) and use device search to find and filter devices.
  • (Optional) Practice correlating low device sync success with crashes using the device timeline.

Topics in this lesson

Work through the topics below in order:

  • Inspecting metric payloads
  • The anatomy of the device timeline
  • Traces and issues
  • Device Vitals and device search

What’s next

Once you’ve worked through the topics above, you know how to read what a device sent, follow a single device’s history, and trace a fleet-level regression back to the crash behind it. Use these tools together whenever a fleet-wide signal needs explaining.
