Lesson 7 – Debugging with a modem trace

Overview

The modem core on the nRF9160 SiP outputs a modem trace that contains information about the network traffic, which is very useful when debugging your cellular application. In this lesson, we will go through how the modem tracing in the modem core works, and the general steps needed to take a modem trace.

In the exercise section, we will practice configuring the application code to take a modem trace and flash it to the device. Then, while the application is running, we will take the modem trace using the Cellular Monitor application in nRF Connect for Desktop. In exercise 2, we will open the modem trace in Wireshark and go through some of Wireshark’s features and how to read the modem trace.

Objectives

  • Learn how modem tracing works in the nRF9160 SIP.
  • Understand the general steps needed to take a modem trace from the modem core.
  • Examine an unencrypted modem trace and how to use it to debug your application.
  • Practice through hands-on exercises how to capture a modem trace and decrypt it using Nordic tools.
