Lesson 3 – Peripherals and system components

Overview

The nRF54L Series integrates a broad set of analog and digital peripherals designed to meet the needs of most wireless applications.
This lesson will begin with the power and clock management system, including the available power modes, followed by the 2.4 GHz radio and its key features. Next, we will review the analog peripherals (SAADC and comparators) and the digital peripherals, such as the global real-time counter, watchdog timers, timers/counters, PWMs, and quadrature decoders.

The nRF54L SoCs also offer a comprehensive range of communication peripherals, including UART, SPI, I²C, I²S/TDM, PDM, NFC, and USB. These will also be examined in detail. Finally, we will cover the RISC-V coprocessor, which extends the SoC’s peripheral set with precompiled SoftPeripherals, and enables the development of fully customized real-time protocols using the Nordic Semiconductor High-Performance Framework. The last but not least peripheral we cover is Axon NPU, which is a dedicated AI accelerator core, designed to increase the speed and efficiency of TensorFlow Lite models

Objective

  • Understand the architecture and function of key nRF54L Series peripherals.
  • Learn about the Fast Lightweight Peripheral Processor and its role in efficiently managing/offloading tasks that require real-time attention.
  • Explore the role of system clocks and regulators in power efficiency.
