Lesson 5 – Development choices and demo

Overview

While understanding the architecture and features of any SoC is vital for product development, learning how to actually develop the application is equally important. Questions like “What are the Software Development Kit options?”, “What tools are available for making development easier?”, and “How can I reproduce the power consumption numbers presented in the datasheet?” may arise along the way.

In this lesson, we will tackle the practical aspects of developing with the nRF54L Series. First, we will look at the development options available and how to choose the best one for your application. Then, we will measure the device’s power consumption step-by-step using different real-world Bluetooth LE use cases (Advertising with varying intervals of advertising, connection with varying throughput, and different sleep modes). Optionally, you can follow along with your own hardware to see the results for yourself.

Objective

  • Explore the firmware development options for the nRF54L Series, including both RTOS-based and bare metal applications, and understand each’s capabilities and limitations.
  • Get familiar with key Nordic tools that developers can use to evaluate and debug Bluetooth LE projects.
  • Learn how to use the Online Power Profiler (OPP) to predict power consumption for different real-world use cases.
  • Learn to measure power consumption with the Power Profiler Kit II (PPK2) and compare results with the datasheet and OPP for different real-world use cases.

Hardware recommendation (optional)

This lesson has an optional hardware recommendation in case you would like to follow along with the steps described in the last two topics to reproduce the results for yourself.
